Product Developer, Soft Goods at Incase, SF

As a member of the Incase Product Development Team, the Product Developer serves as a liaison between Product Management, Design, Sourcing, and various vendor partners. The Product Developer is responsible for developing prototypes and products in accordance with plans, strategies, and timelines agreed upon by the Product Team and for updating all stakeholders regarding progress and challenges in a regular and timely manner. The Product Developer will ensure that all products are producible, executed in accordance with design intent, and at required cost and quality standards and associated deadlines. The Product Developer is also accountable for researching materials and manufacturing techniques, assisting sourcing with identifying and auditing appropriate new vendor partners, and maintaining standards across vendors for products that require multiple sources.

Key areas of responsibility include

  • Reviewing spec packages and samples (outbound and inbound) from suppliers to assure execution of original spec and design intent and provide feedback and recommendations on how to proceed
  • Communicating clearly with vendors on a timely basis, to convey design, function, quality and feature requirements
  • Influencing product material, tooling, and assembly methods to ensure that products meet or exceed predetermined cost and margin targets
  • Planning and tracking the development schedule of assigned products and packaging to ensure timely execution according to the product development calendar and required production dates
  • Maintaining and developing a specifications process and contributing to spec documents for all products managed as well as maintaining all records, style files, and samples associated with the product development activities, including progressing initial specifications to QC level specifications
  • Building and maintaining accurate development reports to track material and color information, minimums, costs and lead times
  • Partnering with suppliers to ensure the superior quality and timely delivery of prototype samples, sales samples, and golden samples for each product, collection, and season
  • Managing product change plans and prototyping for unplanned product changes that arise as a result of a change in customer requirements or other market factors
  • Monitoring prototyping progress, anticipating problems, and addressing /facilitating solutions in a timely manner to minimize quality problems and production delays
  • Addressing all product quality issues by determining root cause and corrective action, and facilitating solutions internally and with suppliers
  • Managing product development across vendors to maintain consistency and overall quality across product lines and manufacturers
  • Making sound business recommendations to management

Specific Skills

  • 3 years of Industry experience, preferably with cut and sew items related to technology accessories
  • BA/BS degree in Product Development, Industrial Design, or related field
  • Must have dynamic understanding of the design and development process from concept to production
  • Broad knowledge of materials and cut and sew construction techniques is preferred
  • Must understand industry testing protocols and basic production processes
  • Experience working China-based supply chain
  • Must be very organized and have exemplary time management skills
  • Must be a critical thinker and excellent communicator
  • Ability to prioritize and re-prioritize workload as needed
  • Ability to develop strong partnerships and build consensus; equally capable at working independently
  • Proficiency with PC/MAC is required
  • Proficiency with CS5 and related tools/programs is required
  • Must be willing to travel to China up to 30% of the time
  • Fluency in Mandarin is a plus
